Janez Volkar: Noshaq Forty Years Ago

Country: Slovenia
Director: Janez Volkar
Category: Lectures

Forty years ago, six Slovenian and seven Polish climbers traveled to a turbulent Afghanistan. The first combined expedition of Polish and Yugoslav climbers had set their sights on Noshaq, 7,492m. The problems of Polish organizers and unexpectedly high prices of transportation and porters made any acclimatization impossible. But once we started up the mountain, there was no stopping us. All of us reached the summit and we quickly returned to the valley to prepare for the month-long, grueling ride home on the backs of trucks, buses, and trains. After eighty-nine days we were reunited with our friends and family, satisfied with our ascent and full of new experiences. Some of the expedition members went on to even higher summits, while others felt that they’ve had enough.

Jernej Kruder: Story of two worlds

Country: Slovenia
Director: Jernej Kruder
Category: Lectures

Jernej has been climbing for as long as he can remember. He started on small indoor training walls in Celje but soon realized that climbing can be so much more. He entered competitions and started climbing outside, where he explored all forms of sport climbing and never ran out of challenges. Bouldering has always been his favorite, though, and he’s experienced the most competitive success in this discipline, as well as climbing some of the hardest problems in the world. But it wasn’t enough, so he ventured further and began pushing his limits in multi-pitch climbing and deep-water soloing, where he’s recently grabbed the coveted second ascent of Sharma’s Es Pontas.

Jernej Šček: Beyond the Myth – Emilio Comici

Country: Italy
Category: Lectures

People of Trieste have always sailed in the Alps and climbed in the Adriatic Sea. We combine bays and valleys, islands and peaks, fishing taverns and mountain huts. Trieste is a seaside city with an authentic mountaineering tradition, which has been written by the giants of classical and modern alpinism. In the city of countless stories, violent resistance, and silent connections, the shackles of objectivity have always been too tight for the truth.
Emilio Comici is a legend of alpinism and many have held on to him like a handhold. Examining touching video footage and rare photos and exploring the man’s actions and words, foregoing interpretations of biographers, we’ll go beyond the myth to find an instinctive athlete, visionary, teacher of the art of climbing, direttissima master, gentle dancer in the vertical realm, and obedient idol of the regime. Daimon Comici between love and hate.

Martina Čufar Potard: Steely-fingered mom

Country: Slovenija
Director: Martina Čufar Potard
Category: Lectures

Martina Čufar Potard has been climbing for twenty-eight years ‒ almost three quarters of her life. In 2007 she gave a lecture at the first mountain film festival focusing on her seventeen years on the competition circuit, which included an overall world cup win. When she stopped competing she traveled to USA (Yosemite, Indian Creek) and Mexico (El Gigante), she’s visited numerous warm crags in the south of France and Spain during winters, and she also went to Chamonix, where she’s been living since 2009 together with husband Nicolas and their two children. With two young boys to take care of, she of course travels less these days, but her passion for climbing remains undiminished and she’s managed to climb her second 8c route a couple of months ago. Her talk will take the audience to the cracks and trad climbing of the USA, the perfect granite above Chamonix, and the overhanging tufas of Verdon. She’ll shed some light on being a climbing mom and infect everyone with her love of the rock. Beware, there is no antidote.

Nives Meroi and Roman Benet: Three Makalus

Country: Italy
Director: Nives Meroi & Roman Benet
Category: Lectures

This climbing couple with thirty years of history between them is one of the best in Italy and worldwide, especially when you think about all of the eight-thousanders they climbed in impeccable style. All their ascents were carried out without supplemental oxygen and altitude porters, and often they climbed new routes or less known faces. Due to their pure style, some of the summits required more than one expedition, such as K2, which they climbed on their third attempt. But the most difficult and the most important achievement of their lives was the battle with their 15th eight-thousander: Roman’s illness. It took them five years and two marrow transplantations to reach the top and continue on their path. On 17 May 2014 they stood atop Kangchenjunga, and on 12 May 2016 they were again together on the summit of Makalu. The couple will also talk about Nives’ book Non ti farò aspettare, which was published in 2015.

Robert Schauer: Gasherbrum IV

Country: Austria
Category: Lectures

Austrian Robert Schauer is a former expert alpinist having completed some of the world’s most difficult climbs, most notably a winter ascent of the Eiger North Face and five of the world’s 8,000 metre peaks, including the first Austrian ascent of Mount Everest. His most outstanding achievement is the first ascent of the West Face of Gasherbrum IV in alpine style from 1985, and one year later Schauer created the International Mountain and Adventure Film Festival Graz, Austria. The festival, now called Mountainfilm Graz, celebrated its 30th edition in 2016. In his lecture he’ll talk about his approach to mountaineering and his first 8,000 metre peaks Gasherbrum I and Nanga Parbat. He’ll also touch upon his main achievement: Gasherbrum IV with its impressive West face, which is almost 3,000 metres high. It took him and his Polish climbing partner Voytek Kurtyka ten days to climb the Shining Wall in alpine style. Their route from 1985 still hasn’t been repeated.
